The highest priority in Cub Scouts is protecting our youth. Child abuse is a serious problem in our society, and unfortunately, it can occur anywhere, even in Scouting. Youth safety is of paramount importance to Scouting. For that reason, Scouting America continues to create barriers to abuse beyond what have previously existed in Scouting. Scouting America places the greatest importance on providing the most secure environment possible for its youth members. To maintain such an environment, numerous procedural and leadership selection policies have been developed and provide parents and leaders with multiple online and print resources for all Scouting programs. All leaders are required to complete Youth Protection Training yearly. All parents are encouraged to take the training. To complete the training online, go to my.Scouting.org and establish an account using the member number you receive when you register for a membership.
Youth Protection Mission Statement: True youth protection can be achieved only through the focused commitment of everyone in Scouting. BALOO is Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation a Cub Scout leader training required for any Cub Scout den or pack outdoor event. The Scouting America requires that you have at least one BALOO-trained adult on every Cub Scout den or pack overnight outdoor event. That include pack camping and Webelos den overnighters.
Leaders who complete BALOO training are better prepared to plan pack den or pack overnight events.
You’ll learn how to make camping activities and outings fun. You’ll discover how to keep your Cub Scouts safe and entertained. And you’ll learn how to plan an event that’s rooted firmly in Cub Scouting’s principles.
Successful experiences in the outdoors make Cub Scouts — and their parents — more likely to keep coming back.
BALOO Training is offered by the district annually. Check their Facebook page for details
The EDGE method is a four-step technique for teaching a skill or concept to someone else. It stands for Explain, Demonstrate, Guide, and Enable.
The trainer first explains how something is done, then demonstrates it while explaining again. Next, the trainer guides the learner through the steps of the task, giving feedback and assistance as needed. Finally, the trainer enables the learner to do the task on their own, checking for understanding and mastery.
EDGE is very basic, but it really does work. The Scouting America requirements for Tenderfoot and Life ranks require the Scout to use the EDGE method to help somebody else learn a skill.
It will help Cub Scouts learn and retain skills also. So it is not only for Scouting America and Venturers, but for den leaders also
Trainer's EDGE is Scouting America's trainer development course designed to help Scouters put into practice the EDGE training model and gain self-confidence through hands-on training experiences. The Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) course builds and expands on the concepts and themes introduced in Scoutmaster Position-Specific Training and provides Scouters with the confidence to take youth into the outdoors. Specifically, this hands-on program gives adult leaders a practical introduction to the patrol method of a Scout-led troop by teaching many of the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. In addition, the teaching methods, activities, and games model the variety of teaching used in effective and engaging Scouting programs.
The skills sessions presented in Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills closely follow the Scouting America's Handbook and are meant to serve as an adult training outline. By using these skills sessions in conjunction with the Scouting America handbooks, trainers can be sure new leaders are proficient in many of the basic outdoor skills through First Class rank, and gain exposure to the patrol method and numerous teaching methods and learning games.
IOLS is offered by the district annually. Check their Facebook page for details
